Our dedicated Membership Coordinator, Brooke, received a call last school year that reminded us how important our mission is. It was from a mother of three young boys who had recently moved to Portage County from a southern state. She was navigating the challenges of settling into a new community.

The mother was determined to secure a job and provide for her family. Still, an obstacle stood in her way - the lack of affordable childcare. She was finding it difficult to accept job offers.

The mother heard about the Boys & Girls Club of Portage County and then called. Brooke provided information about our programs and operating hours. The mother's excitement was profound, but she could not help but voice her worry regarding the cost.

We often get asked about our fee: "Is that for one day?" Brooke explained that our fees are one-time, and if children qualify for Free or Reduced Priced Lunch at school, then attending the Club is only $10 per year. At that moment, the mother's voice trembled with relief and happiness and repeatedly expressed her gratitude.  

Now, this mother works full-time, and after a great summer at the Club, her boys have formed friendships that have carried into the school year.
