YES Program
The Boys & Girls Club of Portage County is partnering with Portage County Health and Human Services Department (PCHHS), Stevens Point Area Public School District, Children’s Wisconsin, and local Law Enforcement for the purpose of diverting youth from the formal youth justice system. Our goal is to reduce the amount of Youth Justice Referrals from Law Enforcement; reduce disruptive behaviors in local schools; and address youth’s individual needs surrounding past trauma, mental health concerns, alcohol and other drug abuse (AODA) issues, and school-based anxieties. We are striving to achieve these goals by providing programming designed to address youth mental health, substance use issues, and other behavioral challenges in the school and community setting.

Truancy Program
The Truancy Program is a collaborative program between the Boys & Girls Club of Portage County, the Stevens Point Area School District, Portage County Health & Human Services and the Portage County Court System. Students are referred to the Court by the school district when they meet the criteria for Habitual Truancy and when school-led interventions have been unsuccessful in reducing the students’ truancies.
All students referred to the program will be monitored and will meet with a Student Success Specialist for weekly/biweekly mentoring. The Student Success Specialist monitors their attendance and academic progress, works with students to create a plan to reduce truancy and improve academic performance, and checks in regularly with students at school.

Mentoring Program
Our Mentoring program helps teen Club members who are at-risk of dropping out of school and not graduating to develop the academic, behavioral, and social skills needed to be successful. The program pairs Club members with a Student Success Specialist who becomes a resource and mentor for youth.
Boys & Girls Club of Portage County Student Success Specialists collaborate with parents, teachers, administrators, and school liaison officers to identify students that might benefit the most from participation in the Mentoring program.
Areas of program focus are academics, building life skills, identifying what students already do well and building on it, providing community resources to them and their families, keeping students and their families connected with their school district and providing fun opportunities through the Boys & Girls Club.
