"Boys & Girls Club to Offer Free Lunches"

Mar 16, 2022

The Boys & Girls Club is proud that we are able to help Portage County youth to receive nutritious and delicious meals. In this news article from June 2003, our free lunch program was introduced for the first time.

“The Boys & Girls Club of Portage County will offer free lunches for students this summer.
Rockman’s Catering will prepare lunches for all participating students every day the club is open. The organization is accepting donations to help offset food-related costs. The program will start Wednesday.
The Summer Food Program is paid for by the U.S Department of Agriculture and is administrated by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. It provides nutritious meals to low-income children when school meals are not available.
The Club is in the process of opening two new sites.
The Stevens Point Housing Authority has contracted with the Boys & Girls Club program to provide services to apartment residents for students in grades kindergarten through 12. This program will be through the summer only, said Kevin Quevillon, executive director for the Boys & Girls Club of Portage County.
The Club also is working with Amherst leaders to establish an extension at the Lettie Jensen Memorial Community Center, he said.
Other summer programs at the club include weekly themes and field trips.
The Club also is kicking off its Support Your Local Kids Campaign to raise money for program operations.”

A lot has changed since 2003, but the Boys & Girls Club of Portage County providing healthy meals and snacks to youth remains the same. Now every day after school and during the summer of Club, our youth are provided with healthy meals and snacks and even sometimes are taught how to make them.
