Did You Know?

From 2022-2023, 58 youth have been referred to the Truancy Abatement Program. Of those youth, 39% have been successfully and wholly discharged from all Truancy Court sanctions by the end of the school year in May 2023.

Of 126 youth referred to the YES program since 2020, 94.4% have successfully avoided a formal youth justice referral or a municipal citation for their behaviors.

Since Gateway began in 2007, 162 “high-risk” youth have been served.

  • Of these 162 youth, only 50 reoffended (30.8%), and only 12 children were placed into out-of-home care (7.4%) during program participation.

Our Why

The School District of Stevens Point contacted one of our Student Success Specialists, Linda and let her know they had a student they would like her to work with, who is a senior, has a very low self-esteem, and is failing all of her classes, which may lead to her not graduating high school.

The first time Linda met with her, Linda asked her to tell her a little bit about herself and to give her three things she was good at. She could not think of anything she was good at! As we worked together, Linda began noticing some things that she felt were strengths in her life. Linda told her she was a hard worker, she communicated well and she was friendly to everyone she met. Linda could tell this meant a lot to her.

They began working together weekly and she worked hard at improving her grades. She excelled in her science/medical classes and worked hard to get her other grades up. She is currently passing 5/7 classes! And she can now tell Linda more than three things that she is good at!

The other day they talked about her going to college after high school. She told Linda she never thought she would be able to go to college. Now, they are meeting with our career center to help her write a college essay and learn about grants and scholarships for college.

Thanks to our school administration and to the relationship Linda has formed with this student through the Be Great Graduate Program, she now has a wonderful future to look forward to.
