The Wisconsin Seal a Smile program found that 3 in 5 third graders had at least one cavity, demonstrating the prevalence of this preventable disease among young people in our state and the need for oral health education.
Children from low-income families experience a higher prevalence of poor oral health, partially due to limited access to oral healthcare services.
Unfortunately, many dentists do not accept patients with Medicaid, which provides low reimbursement rates for dental services. Consequently, although many children from low-income families have dental insurance through Medicaid, their families often struggle to find providers who accept their insurance.
As a result, only 33% of young people (ages 1-20) enrolled in BadgerCare have received preventative dental services.
45% of our Club members are enrolled in BadgerCare or do not have insurance.
